In his teachings, the Buddha frequently emphasised four qualities of the heart: friendliness, joy, compassion, and equanimity. These qualities – known as brahma-vihāras, or “divine abodes” – have been somewhat side-lined in interpretations of the practice since the Buddha’s day. They have been categorized as concentration practices, or simple antidotes to meditative hindrances. In fact, these brahma-vihāras are much more central and integral to the Buddhist path. They are both expressions of the heart’s maturity and pathways of Awakening.
This day will offer an opportunity to reflect on these qualities afresh and to explore through teaching, dialogue and guided meditations how they might become more integral to our practice and life.
